The highly regarded Atlanta-based painter, Katherine Taylor, is known for powerful painting that is a tour-de-force in subtle intensity. In the upcoming exhibition, titled Moving Horizons, the paintings evoke a rapidly shifting line of sight with the geometry of an ever changing environment. Specifically the experience of seeing the landscape through the windows of a moving car is abstracted in these light-filled and nuanced oil on canvas paintings. The car window frames the moving horizon and the transient structures that organize our roadways in a sweeping yet still moment in space and time. Taylor is interested in depicting the geometry of our ever changing environment with a deep and shimmering view of landscape.
Memory, loss, image and space are all collapsed into the surface of paintings that represent escape as a swift and slow illusion from city to shore. Taylor refers to the living landscape as the touchstone and metaphor for human experience. Her work employs the intersections and edges of our natural and man-made landscape as a way to navigate our socio-cultural geography. Light conjures a spectrum of feelings and emotions and using a complex process of multiple layers of oil and numerous reactive mediums, Taylor creates a luminosity suggestive of a range of interpretations from that of a celestial presence to seduction to simple dreamy sensations.
Taylor grew up in Biloxi, Mississippi. She received her BFA at Atlanta College of Art, and her MFA at Georgia State University. She lives and works in Atlanta. Exhibitions include The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art, the Quebec City Biennale, The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Diverseworks, Houston, The Dalton Gallery, Agnes Scott College, GA, The Tubman Museum, Georgia, Brenau University, The Albany Museum of Art, Georgia, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Florida State University Museum of Fine Art and art fairs in Chicago, New York, Miami, Portland and London.
